Windows were made for hundreds of years with wood frames.  The Greeks and Romans made windows in their times with wood frames as it was the only suitable material available.  Wood from old growth forests was very high quality in those times, but weathering issues over the years was always a challenge.

In the early 1900s steel became available as an option and was mass produced for the first time in factories . After World War II aluminum frames became popular and were used into the 1990s but energy codes like Title 24 in California have dramatically reduced residential demand.

Vinyl frame windows were introduced in Germany after World War II as contractors and the building industry there scrambled to meet the shortage of wood products. Vinyl frame windows in the 1960s in the U.S. eventually started to mature and evolve providing many advantages over the previously used frame materials.  Wider acceptance of vinyl as a frame material occurred in the 1970s as a result of the energy crisis, and today approximately half of all windows produced in the U.S. are vinyl.
